Description:
This exercise class is for people who have received a cancer diagnosis and have completed all cancer treatments. (Treatments may have included surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or rehabilitation therapy.)
Following treatment, some people may feel fatigued or deconditioned (less endurance and/or strength than before treatment). Exercise is important to overcome de-conditioning symptoms; and exercise is especially important for people who have had a history of cancer.
This class includes an educational segment prior to each exercise portion. Educational topics include:
Exercise Benefits and Effects on Fatigue
Barriers to Exercise and how to Overcome Them
Personal Goal Setting
Stretching, Strengthening Postural and Exertion Guidelines
Body Mechanics
General fitness
Demonstration of varied exercise (Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, and Nia)
The exercise portion includes a warm-up, low impact aerobics, strengthening, stretching and cool down activities.
Physical and Occupational Therapists will lead class instruction. Therapists are an integral part of the Aurora cancer core team!
Funding for cancer survivors to participate one time in the Movin' and Groovin' class has generously been provided through monies raised from Aurora Health Care's fundraising endeavors. Cancer survivors are required to pay a nominal fee of $20; however, this will be refunded if they attend at least 7 of the 8 sessions.
