Through work with Milwaukee County departments, the Office For Persons With Disabilities provides services that make County programs, services, and facilities accessible to people with disabilities.
Information is made accessible through: Sign language interpreting, Providing auditory listening devices, Producing materials in alternative formats, Publishing Handy-NEWS & NOTES newsletter, and providing telephone information and referral services. Individuals may advertise useful items and equipment in Handy-NEWS & NOTES such as specially equipped vans, stair lifts, hospital beds, etc.
Employment support for people with disabilities by: Providing workplace accommodations for Milwaukee County employees with disabilities, Making employment testing accommodations available to job applicants with disabilities, Referring individuals to community-based employment programs.
Support accessible recreation for people with disabilities by: Operating the Wil-O-Way Summer Camp program, Offering year-round recreation through the Wil-O-Way centers located in Grant and Underwood parks, Promoting recreation programs supported by other community agencies, Distributing tickets to the Admirals, Brewers, Bucks, and Wave to members of the Wil-O-Way Key Card program.
The Office for Persons with Disabilities can assist Transit Plus applicants by coordinating the initial assessment appointment and transportation to that appointment at Transit Plus. They can also offer assistance to Transit Plus riders who have complaints or comments at 414-278-3933. Transit Plus riders who have unique accessibility situations or require a higher level of assistance than the "over one step, through one exterior door" policy can also call them.
Supports accessibility efforts in helping remove barriers by: Reviewing architectural plans to make buildings more accessible, Distributing a newsletter promoting awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act and reviewing departmental procedures and recommend alternatives that support the inclusion of people with disabilities.
